Review Methodology at Scent Chronicles

This review methodology explains exactly how fragrances are tested, evaluated, and written about on Scent Chronicles. My goal is to make every perfume review transparent, consistent, and genuinely helpful, so you can understand how a scent behaves in the real world before deciding whether to try or buy it.

Because I work behind the counter in a niche perfume store and spend a lot of time testing on skin, this review methodology combines professional experience with everyday wear. I apply the same process whether a fragrance is a personal purchase, a press sample, or a classic reference from my collection.

Scent Chronicles review methodology – desk with perfumes, blotters and notes
Every Scent Chronicles review follows a clear, repeatable review methodology.

How I Test Fragrances

Each perfume is worn multiple times before I publish a review. I usually start with blotter tests to get a first impression of the structure, then move to skin tests on different days, in different temperatures and humidity levels when possible. I pay attention to:

  • Opening: first 15–30 minutes after application.
  • Heart: the main character of the scent, usually from minute 30 up to hour 3.
  • Drydown: the final stage on skin, often from hour 3 until the fragrance becomes a soft skin scent.
  • Performance: projection, sillage, and overall longevity during real-life wear.
  • Context: season, occasion, and whether a perfume feels more casual, professional, or special-occasion appropriate.

Notes on sprays used, weather conditions, and reapplications are kept in a personal testing log. This allows me to compare fragrances side by side and maintain a consistent standard across all Scent Chronicles reviews.

Comparisons and Reference Points

Many readers discover new perfumes through comparisons, so this review methodology includes structured reference points. When relevant, I compare a fragrance to:

  • Well-known designer staples and niche bestsellers.
  • Other fragrances with similar note structures (for example, spicy gourmands or aromatic fougères).
  • Older batches or reformulations when I have access to them.

Comparisons are always based on direct testing, not on marketing copy or second-hand opinions. If I have not personally worn a “dupe” or reference scent, I clearly say so in the review.

Samples, Gifts, and Independence

Some perfumes featured on Scent Chronicles are purchased by me, while others may be press samples or gifts. Regardless of the source, this review methodology is the same: there is no payment for positive coverage, and sending a sample never guarantees a review or a favorable opinion. Any PR sample or sponsored collaboration is disclosed clearly in the article, in line with both my Editorial Guidelines and Affiliate Disclosure.

I also follow the spirit of the FTC Endorsement Guides on reviews and testimonials , so readers can trust that every opinion is clearly marked and honestly presented.

How Ratings and Language Are Used

When I use descriptive language such as “beast mode,” “skin scent,” “airy,” or “dense,” these are shorthand ways to communicate how the fragrance behaves on my skin. Any informal terms are always grounded in the structured testing process described in this review methodology. If I use rating scales (for example, 1–5 for performance or versatility), they are relative within the Scent Chronicles archive, not universal or scientific measurements.

Scent is personal, and body chemistry, climate, and personal taste can dramatically change how a perfume behaves. This methodology is designed to give you a clear, honest frame of reference, but it cannot replace your own testing on skin. Why This Review Methodology Matters

Scent Chronicles exists to help readers navigate the perfume world with more clarity and confidence. By sharing this review methodology, I want you to know exactly how each article is created: from the first spray on a blotter to long wear tests on skin, comparisons with other fragrances, and final written impressions. If you ever have questions about how a specific review was conducted, you are welcome to reach out and I will gladly explain the process in more detail.
